Dear Friends and Supporters,
Even though we sent a newsletter last week, we already have another one for you there was so much to update you on that we thought we would do it in small doses so as not to bore you with long messages!
As we mentioned last week, in spite of what anyone may think, your efforts to raise the profile of environmental awareness have not been wasted; some time after our second successful rally, we were invited, along with other environment NGO representatives, to meet the Prime Minister and Minister Pullicino at Castille. Among the issues discussed were the Rationalisation Schemes and reform of the outdated Rent Laws. We were also asked for our proposals on the rehabilitation of old properties in urban cores. The meeting which was expected to last half an hour, in fact lasted two and a half hours, and although one cannot expect overnight results from such things, it was felt to be a very positive meeting which brought us to a greater understanding of each other’s position on key issues.
While we are still in contact with the EU on Malta’s non-compliance with the SEA directive on the Rationalisation Scheme, we are also forging ahead in other directions. We have for some time been considering the setting up of sub-committees in each town and village in Malta and Gozo in order to record buildings of outstanding interest, monitor building applications etc. An eager supporter is already taking steps to establish a sub-committee in Lija while supporters in other areas are also showing interest. We therefore need to hear from you if you are interested in spending a few hours a month helping to preserve the character and quality of your town or village. As many of you had shown an interest in volunteering their time when registering with us, we hope that this call will be take up enthusiastically.
We are also looking for another person interested in working on a specific project to promote the upkeep of old houses through scheme of grants, tax exemptions etc.
The next activity on FAA’s agenda is a press release which will be held in Wied Tal-Madonna in Mellieha. This is another valley currently being threatened with development. We feel that this is yet another case of big business raping the countryside with the connivance of not-very ethical architects, as well as MEPA failing in enforcement duties as regards the illegally set up back-road across the valley.
So, that’s all the news for today. We will get back to you again as soon as we have more to share.
Regards, The Committee Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar
