Newsletter 24th May 2008

Dear Members,

Last Saturday 17th May, Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar together with numerous Attard residents held a successful Press Coference at Ta' Fgieni Attard to announce that we have made a formal request to the Prime Minister to initiate a review of the Attard Local Plan in order to preserve a green area for the residents that had been indicated on that site. As already stated, our group feels very strongly that certain aspects of the Local Plans, which were revised and ratified in August 2006 are very damaging to our communities. You can view a picture of last Saturday's Press Conference further down.

We are also attaching our latest Press Release related to the pollution caused by some Maltese buses, which is damaging our health.

As we have done in our recent newsletters, we are forwarding you news of interesting events which to be held in the coming days which you might like to attend.

As part of its role to stimulate a wide-ranging public debate on matters of importance, The Today Public Policy Institute will be making a presentation on ‘Climate Change: The Global Challenge and an Action Plan for Malta’. The speakers will be Michael Zammit Cutajar, who is Malta ’s Ambassador on Climate Change, and Martin Scicluna, who is the Director General of the think-tank. This Institute was set up last summer as an independent and impartial one, focusing specifically on public policies for the purpose of improving those policies or creating viable alternatives. An invitation for this event is attached with this newsletter.

Another event which will be held at the Corinthia San Gorg Hotel St. Julians on Thursday 29th May is a technical presentation on Rainwater Harvesting in Malta . Everyone knows how important water is on our small islands, and the presentation will mainly deal on new sustainable solutions which can be identified and implemented in order to reduce our dependence on seawater desalination which comes at a huge cost especially in view of spiraling energy costs and capping of greenhouse gas emissions from power stations. We are attaching the invitation for this presentation below.

The Institute for Environmental Studies is pleased to announce that the course "Sigar Indigeni Maltin" is being organised in Gozo, on 14th June, 2008. Further to the belief that enhancement of environmental knowledge elicits awareness and respect of our environment, this initiative has been instigated by the favourable response received for this course when it was held in Malta last February, and by subsequent requests for this course and other environmental courses to be held in Gozo. We are also attaching the flyer and the application for this course. Early booking is recommended to ensure participation. Kindly note that the participation fee includes two coffee breaks. While participants can make their own arrangements for lunch, the organisers will be booking lunch at a local restaurant close to the venue. Any participants who wish to join are welcome to contact Ms. Julie Tabone on telephone number 356 2143 1910 by the 30th May in order to book.

Regards,
The Committee
