Welcome
TOUR OF THE AUGUSTINIAN PRIORY (St. Wistin) Saturday 28th January 2012

The first Augustinian Priory was demolished in 1551 by local residents, after the Turkish invasion, for fear that it could have been used as a base for an assault on Mdina. The Priory was rebuilt in 1588 only to be demolished and rebuilt after less than 200 years.
The French occupation of the Maltese Islands brought about many new decrees, including that religious orders in Malta could not retain more than one Priory and in fact this one was taken over by the French. The French soldiers' pillaging of the church so enraged the local population that when Col. Masson approached on patrol, he was set upon, thrown from a balcony in Rabat and killed, triggering the revolt of the Maltese against the French.
The Priory now lives much less turbulent times, but there is plenty to see and hear about in this wonderful old building which is not open to the public. Fr. Leslie Gatt has kindly invited FAA members to a special tour to enjoy this beautiful Baroque building and learn about its chequered past.
At the end of the tour guests will enjoy one of FAA's high teas with lovely fresh home-baked cakes.
Time : Assemble at 2pm, tour starts at 2.30pm SHARP, no late entries please as this is a secure building and anyone arriving late may not be heard once the tour gets under way.
Parking : Il-Veduta car park/car park opposite Howard Gardens/ in the ditch by Greek's Gate Mdina.
How to get there : As you come up Saqqajja to Rabat, turn right at the roundabout and then left. The Church and Priory are on the first left but continue straight for parking.
