Deadly air pollution by George Debono - 18.05.2010

Nationalist MP Frans Agius is quoted as saying in Parliament that 82 per cent of Malta's deaths were due to heart disease and cancer and that these were the result of "unbalanced diets, lack of exercise, smoking, excess alcohol consumption and obesity". This is only partly correct because it omits possibly the most important present-day cause of early death: air pollution. It is uncanny how ministers persist in omitting the issue of the air pollution arising out of combined emissions from electricity generation and road traffic.

Crab burrows crushed under concrete by Annalise Falzon - 18.05.2010

The students I walk with along the beautiful valley of Baħrija always ask me that unanswerable question: "How has this been allowed to happen?"

We stared with disbelief last year when we saw masses of blue clay and stone being bulldozed in front of our eyes just a couple of metres away from one of the most important freshwater springs in Malta and right in the middle of one of Malta's supposedly top protected sites.

Destruction of the beach and children's playground at Qui-si-sana. to accommodate the widening of road by George Debono - 03.12.09

I wish to register my objection to this in the strongest possible manner. It goes against all principles of urban management and pollution limitation. Ity will also destroy one of the few remaining open areas in Sliema. Creating and widening roads only creates more traffic and this can only increas Sliema's pollution.

United on Piano project by Andrè Zammit - 03.10.09

Lawrence Gonzi, a leader I greatly admire for his many sterling qualities, is reported to have said in Parliament that "the Piano project should unite the Maltese people, not divide them". It is difficult to get unanimity on any project but, in this case, it looks as if we have a very wide consensus against the project. We have unity against the project.

How to improve the piano project  by A. J. Tabone - 02.10.09

The public consultation on the Piano project is about to end. It is the right time to offer some comments on points which, as far as I know, have not been raised or have only been lightly touched upon.

The dirtiest street in Valletta  by Jennifer Micallef - 20.08.09

If one had to hold a competition entitled “Name the Dirtiest Street in Valletta” I am certain that the lower part of Old Mint Street would win the prize. I am mainly referring to Old Mint Street corner to Archbishop Street and with St.Christopher’s Street.

Who’s harming the economy?  by A. J. Tabone - 13.05.05

One expects balance and objectivity in contributions by editorial staff of an independent newspaper. Unfortunately, neither of these qualities was present in “environmentalists’ action ‘causing great harm’ to economy” (TMIS, 6 September). The article’s tone and content were more appropriate to a broadsheet issued on behalf of developers and estate agents.
