Seminars on French influence in Malta at the Senglea Marittima Festival, Friday 17th - Sunday 19th June, Senglea
Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA) is supporting Senglea Local Council in this year’s Senglea Marittima Festival with the aim of increasing awareness of Senglea`s historical heritage. Senglea will come alive from the 17 to the 19th of June with re-enactments focused on pre-war and wartime experiences as well as an Italian settecento corteo accompanied by the Sbandieratori from Siracusa. The latter will be followed by the majestic entrance and visit of Grand Master La Senglea and his entourage to Senglea.
On the weekend the majestic Macina building will host audio-visual displays, lectures and exhibitions including Azure and Ochre, an art exhibition of established and upcoming artists, as well as A Dream for the Three Cities a creative public installation where visitors will put forward their personal dream for the Three Cities.
The French Connection Seminars will be opened by the French Ambassador on Saturday 18th June with talks from 2pm till 4pm: Charles Xuereb will deliver a talk on little-known French connections with the Cottonera, while Dr. Simon Mercieca will delve into the French origins of the name "L-Isla". Rear Admiral Bellec will conclude the Saturday session with a vividly-illustrated presentation on the influence of the Maltese cross upon the French Navy. On Sunday 19th June at 3pm to 5pm Terrence M.P. Duggan will give an eye-opening lecture on building restoration and the exterior paintwork that was used at the time of the Knights, while Victor Wickman will discuss maritime trade - Malta’s vital lifeline.
