Xemxija Underground Flour Mill Walk

On Saturday 27th November Fr Eugene Theuma gave FAA members and guests a fascinating tour of the Roman Baths at Xemxija explaining each feature in great detail and opening our eyes to the sophistication of the community that used the site. This was followed by a tour of the Mistra Undeground Emergency Flour Mill very ably guided by Mr. Oliver Mallia, team leader of Fondazzjoni Wirt Industrijali in charge of this site. The Mill is one out of seven underground flour mills built in Malta during the Cold War in the ‘50s in order to ensure supplies of bread to the population in case of a crisis and is the only one which has been restored to perfect working order. After giving background information on the mill, Mr. Mallia, activated the machinery, to the fascination of all present and proceeded with a technical demonstration.

The tour of the Roman Baths and mill was followed by a tea and delicious home-made cakes kindly provided by Mrs Geraldine Portelli and FAA volunteers. Those present were so impressed by both sites and the proficiency of our hosts that further sessions have been requested to explore more of the rich heritage of Xemxija.
